Brooklyn and Curtis Bay’s commercial centers traditionally were focused in three areas – the blocks near the intersection of Hanover Street and Patapsco Avenue, upper Patapsco Avenue from 9th Street to West Bay Avenue and Pennington and Curtis Avenue.
Although there are no longer movie theaters on these streets, there are restaurants, hair salons, doctor’s offices, a flower shop, shoe store, antiques shop, dry cleaner, printers, funeral homes, banks, hardware, sports and furniture stores, convenience stores, and car repair shops. Some have been here for decades and others are new. Click on this to find businesses you are looking for
Although there is no formal merchants association, the Coalition does have an economic development committee that has worked on an urban renewal plan, and other proposals for streetscape improvements. In 2005, Baltimore City Council voted on a new urban renewal plan that establishes guidelines and some restrictions on the types of businesses that can be located in the renewal area. Both Community Associations have been actively working to improve the gateways with signs and plantings and have taken on the addition of murals to blank walls and a railway bridge.
Businesses who want to improve their facades are encouraged to contact the Baltimore Development Corporation (BDC) – David Garza and the Baybrook CDC to learn about grants and loans available. In 2006, the BDC applied to the Maryland Department of Economic Development to extend the Fairfield Enterprise Zone to include our Urban Renewal Plan area as well as the Curtis Bay Industrial Area and Hawkins Point. When approved, this will bring tax credits to business owners who invest in their properties and/or hire additional employees.
